The Sufi Way of Dance and Sound.
with Philip O’Donohoe

at
Our Lady St Mary of Glastonbury

The effect of sound is to produce physical change in any organism. Some vibrations are beneficial and others can be harmful. Sound is energy. Sound has pitch, volume, intensity, tone and certain subtle qualities.

The combination of sacred syllables form a nucleus of spiritual energy that we could say serve as either a magnet to attract or a lens to focus spiritual vibrations. Use of the voice in this way produces a wholes series of physiological, psychological and spiritual effects. Such concentrations can bring a deep sense of peace and joy as can be experienced with other forms of meditation.

Essentially Sufi Dance is an instrument for the transmission of blessing between people. Mystics speak of universal peace, of cosmic consciousness, the peace which is beyond understanding. This kind of spiritual experience however is not the preserve of a few. Samuel Lewis the originator of this form of the dances offered them as a means for all people to experience such states in a relatively accessible way. To paraphrase the biblical phrase. In joy we live and move and have our being. Sufi Dance shows us how.

Venue. Our Lady St Mary of Glastonbury. Magdalene St, Glastonbury, BA6 9EJ.
