"[Christ's] words ring across the ages . . . and strike at the heart of our dilemmas and questions. From this work, I hope and pray that many 'inspired translations' may occur in both the transformed words and actions of those who confront the Cosmic Christ through the words of the Aramaic Jesus."
From the Introduction.
These beautifully rendered translations will delight all who have been touched by the Wisdom of Christ's words but have wondered how the "meek" could ever "inherit the earth" or how one could humanly "love" one's enemies. They provide confirmation to those who have felt or intuited a deeper significance behind some of the most quoted words in the English language.
Douglas-Klotz interprets the often ignored Aramaic heritage of each reading, expanding our understanding of Christ's words. Most of our present English translations come from Greek, a much different language than the Aramaic that Jesus spoke. Returning to the very roots of Jesus's native language illuminates alternate interpretations and allows us to experience new dimensions in familiar teachings. The first line of the Lord's Prayer - Our Father which art in heaven - can, when approached through the original Aramaic, as easily become "O Birther! Father-Mother of the Cosmos," highlighting creation and our place in the universe.
Douglas-Klotz includes a series of meditations or "body prayers" of a kind practised for thousands of years in the Middle East. These take us beyond reading and understanding the teachings of Jesus by teaching us to experience the sound and feeling of Christ's words.
This unique resource will inspire Christians who want to discover the true roots of their tradition, devotees of Judaism and Islam who wish to appreciate the words and insights of a great prophet, and all those interested in creation spirituality, mystical poetry, feminist spirituality, and cross-cultural religion.
Prayers of the Cosmos shows that the familiar words of Jesus truly are both timeless and dynamic.
A companion to the book, gives clear pronunciations of the Aramaic Lord's Prayer and Beatitudes in language teaching style. It also contains musical melodies to both the Aramaic Lord's Prayer and the Beatitudes for chanting, meditation and body prayer.
Spoken and sung clearly by the author and composer Neil Douglas-Klotz.
This CD was completely re-recorded with new commentary by Neil Douglas-Klotz in the spring of 2009. It contains improved renditions of the pronunciations of the Prayer and all of the Beatitudes in Matthew.
