Born in Northern India into a family of musicians renowned for generations, Hazrat Inayat Khan introduced the message of Universal Sufism to Europe and America early in the 20th century. The message he offered of the Unity of Religious Ideals is strongly reflected in the Dances.

Ruth St. Denis, modern dance pioneer, is known as the "grandmother" of the Dances of Universal Peace. Mystic, poet and artist, she dedicated her life to embodying the divine through sacred dance. Samuel Lewis said, "Ruth St. Denis has the faculty of drawing music and dance right out of the cosmos, out of the heart of God. She taught me this faculty".
